Ancient forests in my living room table??

PictureSlight simplification of the issue at hand, but the fact remains that the coverage of our ancient, old growth forests here in BC have decreased by 87% in the past few decades. That's a massive reduction! This is something the Ancient Forest Alliance is working on.
BC has some amazing, beautiful old growth forests, left untouched for centuries. Massive cedars, douglas firs, spruces - in fact, Vancouver Island is home to the largest douglas fir tree in the world! And it remains completely unprotected! (Click here for more details)

Our ancient forests, those that have been growing for centuries, creating niche habitats for flourishing flora and fauna (I like alliterations!), are vast ecosystems that can't be replaced by second growth forests, despite what logging companies might want us to believe. Some scientists from universities in BC a few years ago hoisted themselves up into the canopies of some of these ancient forests to find out what kinds of organisms were living there, and discovered (and are still discovering) new species that have never before been categorized! It's pretty amazing that in this day and age, we're still discovering new species. I hope we can continue to discover new species - while they're still alive and well, living among the birds high above the ground in our ancient forests.

There was an "Avatar"-themed rally on March 27th, and a guided hike through one of the forest trails on the island on the 28th. Critical mass can make a difference! Hopefully you were able to make it out...but if not, check out the beautiful forests we have, go for hikes, get informed and make a difference! :)
